Webacam security-Avoid Being Spied On webcam

There is a frightening new security issue that affects webcam users worldwide. Video footage is being hijacked and broadcasted by an undisclosed Russian site without users' knowledge.

This exposes video content recorded from homes and offices to the public, and – what's worse – it discloses the precise location of each webcam. It is critical to raise awareness of this issue because the implications can potentially be dire. After all, imagine the nefarious possibilities when anyone can gain an intimate glimpse of your day-to-day life. At best, it is a grave invasion of privacy, and the worst outcomes could be life-changing.

The ability to access webcam streams remotely is both the webcams’ biggest selling point and, if not set up correctly, potentially their biggest security weakness. If video streams can be accessed over the internet, then what is stopping someone else from doing the same? That's precisely what this Russian website is doing, and it is airing everything from children innocently playing without knowing they are being watched to the content of web-based business negotiations.

Most international law enforcement agencies have no authority in Russia, simply shutting down this rogue website is not an option. Although these agencies are exploring options for a more permanent solution to this security issue, raising awareness is their simplest route at this juncture.

News outlets have also opted to leave the name of this Russian site a mystery, fearing that identification of the site would encourage people to view the footage, compounding the problem.

The only good news about this situation is that it is easy for webcam users to prevent having their footage stolen and aired. Since the Russian site is using the default passwords for various camera brands to gain access to users' feeds, the best way to protect yourself is to simply change the password.

Although consumers are always urged to change the default password for new tech purchases, many people don't take the time to do so. With this new security issue affecting webcam users; however, it is even more critical to take that extra step and choose a strong password to protect your privacy.
